How to run the Windows Media Player Security Upgrade

The first time you try to download a title to OverDrive Media Console on your computer, you'll receive a prompt to upgrade the security of Windows Media Player. This upgrade is needed in order to play titles protected with DRM (Digital Rights Management), and ensures that the DRM components within Windows Media Play are up to date.

You may also launch this prompt yourself.

·         Open OverDrive Media Console while your computer is connected to the internet.

·         Go to Tools > Windows Media Player Security Upgrade.

Follow the steps below to complete the upgrade.

Using Windows Media Player 11 (or newer)

1.    Click OK to open Windows Media Player.

2.    Click Upgrade in the 'Windows Media Player' dialog box.

3.    Click Close once the upgrade is complete.

4.    Click Play in Windows Media Player to confirm that you have completed the upgrade.

Using Windows Media Player 9 or 10

1.    Click OK to open Windows Media Player.

2.    Click OK in the 'Security Upgrade Required' dialog box.

3.    If you get an Active X popup in the next window, click on it. Click Run Add-on.
Click Play to complete the upgrade.

Still having trouble?

Visit Microsoft's upgrade installation page. You must run the upgrade in Internet Explorer, and you must run Internet Explorer as an administrator.
