Q. How can I find a list of nonprofits in Madison County?

Community Organizations Directory -- http://hmcpl.org/community

The Reference & Adult Services Department of Huntsville-Madison County Public Library created and maintains this directory. It has contact information for chiefly clubs and associations, but it also has nonprofits.

Helpline -- http://www.csna.org/HELPline.php

Crisis Services of North Alabama has a nice list of nonprofits and links to their websites. All of these charities, councils, and agencies deal with people in crisis or in need of assistance as it relates to health, mental health, well-being, etc.

Guidestar – http://www.guidestar.org

You can search for nonprofits by location. A sample search for all nonprofits in Huntsville, Alabama, generatores over 1300 listings. If a nonprofit files a 990, they will show up in Guidestar. It’s a real mix of everything from Randolph School to the Credit Union to the Jane K. Lowe Foundation.

Find the Best -- http://non-profit-organizations.findthebest.com/

Although in BETA form as of December, 2011, this site has interesting information. A search limited to 50 miles of 35801 generates 1900 nonprofits. It looks like you can weed out certain types of nonprofits, like churches, for example, if needed.

Foundation Directory Online – in Main Library use only

The Foundation Center database is only accessible at the Main Library downtown. You can use this directory to develop a list of private foundations in Madison County, North Alabama. Please contact the Reference Department to schedule a training session. Although training can be done in 10-15 minutes, you will be able to use the database more effectively if you are trained first.

ReferenceUSA – http://www.hmcpl.org

This database is accessible remotely, but you will need some training to use it effectively. You can develop lists of nonprofits using this database. If you want to take a look, go to www.hmcpl.org; click on “My Digital Library” in the top left-hand corner; type in your library card number and four digit PIN; scroll down until you see ReferenceUSA under the list of databases. There is a four minute online tutorial you can view under, “Take a Tour” [in the blue toolbar]. Or, you can make an appointment with a Reference Librarian for a 15 minute tutorial.
