Q. How can I find biographical information in the Library?

I need books and magazine articles.

You can search our catalog at hmcpl.org for biographies by entering the person's name (last name first works best) and selecting the "subject" field.  Books marked with a "B" in the call number are located in the biography section of our non-fiction collection on the second floor of the Main Library. Children's biographies are in the Youth Services department on the first floor of the Main Library. All branch libraries have biography collections for youth and adult as well.

The Alabama Virtual Library has an excellent source for biographical information, Biography Reference Bank. This resource allows you to find articles and book excerpts by entering the person's full name (again last name first). It's best not to use abbeviations in the search.  After a brief biographical overview, you will be able to select "Related Biographies" and/or "Related Documents" that will take you to full-text articles on the selected person. Biography Reference Bank provides access to in-depth resources such as "Current Biography", "Facts About the Presidents", "World Authors", and many other databases.

The Alabama Virtual Library is available free of charge to all Alabama residents, courtesy of the Alabama Legislature. If you cannot access the AVL, visit your local public library for a username and password.
