Q. I downloaded an ebook from the library and it shows up on my Nook Tablet but when I try to open it, it says "loan token not found". What is that?

Answer

This error is typically caused when the NOOK has not been authorized properly.  To solve the issue, you need to reset the Adobe credentials on your NOOK.

Here are the instructions for resetting the Adobe credentials using Windows and using Mac:

Get your Adobe IDs to match using Windows

  1. Make sure your computer is properly authorized.
In ADE, go to Library > Authorize Computer…

Screenshot of ADE with the library menu open. The Authorize Computer option is highlighted.

  2. The authorization window opens. If your computer is authorized, continue on to Step 3.
If your computer needs to be authorized, see 'How to authorize Adobe Digital Editions on a computer'.

  3. Reset the ADE folder on the NOOK. For this step, you need to close ADE.

    • Connect your NOOK to your computer.

    • Double-click your NOOK under 'My Computer' or 'Computer'

  4. Locate the folder .adobe-digital-editions and delete it.

  5. Open ADE. When the 'Device Setup Assistance' window opens, click Authorize Device.
If 'Device Setup Assistance' doesn't open, click your NOOK, then go to Options > Activate Device (shown below).

Screenshot of ADE with the Options menu open. The Activate Device option is highlighted.

  6. Delete the title you were having trouble with from your NOOK. You can find it by clicking on your NOOK in the 'Library View' of ADE.
You may need to delete other library books that have been transferred to your device.

  7. Try transferring the title you were having trouble with to your NOOK again.
You should now be able to read the title.

  1. The only solution that worked for me was to borrow a 'dated' book from the library, then load that to my NOOK ( via the usual ADE process) and, lo and behold, all my problems solved. I had previously spent countless frustrated hours trying all the suggested solutions (of uninstalling/deregistering/authorizing/wiping hidden files/reinstalling to no avail. BTW: Running Catalina on a mac , ADE 4.5 , with an old Nook Glowlight. To borrow an old book ( using overdrive/library), sort the 'Available Now' by 'Date Added", hit the last page to get the oldest one.. The only thing I did , in between the 'still not working' and 'working' phase, was within ADE I deleted ( not returned) the borrowed titles on the nook - and then brought that 'old borrowed book' through the usual process ( download epub, load in ADE, transfer to nook). That old book opened fine on Nook. And after that success, all my other 'more recent' books worked fine.
